Rust prevention solutions for engine flywheels

The flywheel is located between the engine and the transmission and has the role of stabilising the speed, transmitting power and protecting the transmission. The single mass flywheel has a simpler structure and, although it stores energy and stabilises the speed, it has a large jitter and a large impact on the transmission. The dual mass flywheel is a good solution to these problems, but the structure has also become more complex and the requirements for rust protection have become higher.

The single mass flywheel has relatively low rust protection requirements. The focus is on protecting the gear ring, which is connected to the starter gear and rust will cause problems such as difficult starting and strange noises. The dual mass flywheel is generally made up of the first mass, planetary gear, damping spring, second mass, connecting disc, flywheel housing, balancing block etc. The materials are roughly divided into two categories: cast iron and spring steel, both of which are rust-prone materials. Several parts of the dual mass flywheel are working surfaces, none of which can be rusted, which makes rust prevention more difficult.

To protect the springs and planetary gears, grease is added to the inside of the dual mass flywheel. As the flywheel works in a confined space, it is understandable if anti-rust oil is applied to the surface, and this method of rust prevention was mostly used before, but as the country pays more attention to environmental protection and people become more health conscious, the use of anti-rust oil is greatly reduced and nowadays gas phase anti-rust products are commonly used. This is a new type of rust prevention technology, the product can volatilise rust prevention gas, the gas adsorbs on the metal surface to separate the rust causing oxygen molecules and water molecules from the metal, thus playing a role in preventing rust. Compared to rust prevention oil, gas phase rust prevention has the advantages of being clean, efficient, environmentally friendly and low cost.

The B+Z solution for dual mass flywheels is usually to wrap the flywheel in B+Z Vapour Phase Paper Type R, seal it with a normal plastic bag and place it in a cardboard box. Alternatively, the flywheel can be wrapped in a Type M VCI bag only, again with a cardboard box outside. These two types of packaging generally provide a rust protection period of 3-6 months. If a longer period of rust protection is required, the amount of material used can be increased, for example by increasing the grammage of the paper or the thickness of the anti-rust bag, or a desiccant can be used again.

B+Z has been focusing on the development and application of vapour phase antirust technology for more than 10 years and has a mature and complete product system with successful antirust packaging cases in many fields such as automotive, machinery, metallurgy, energy, marine and aerospace.
